IT ALL STARTED IN THAILAND
Scholars of Sustenance Foundation (SOS) is the first food rescue foundation in Thailand and was established in 2016. Our mission is to enhance the food system in the country to minimize needless loss of surplus food and improve food equity by redistributing high quality surplus food from food related businesses such as hotels, grocers, restaurants, and other suppliers to communities in need in Bangkok, Phuket, Hua Hin, Chiang Mai and other places in the country every day.
To date, Scholars of Sustenance Thailand programs have rescued approximately
9.8 million kgs of surplus food, served 41 million meals to 3,750+ communities, and reduced 24,874 tons of C02 creation if the food were wasted in landfills.
OUR
PROGRAMS
DAILY
OPERATIONS
SOS Operations, daily missions that drive wonders across Thailand: namely Bangkok, Phuket, and Hua Hin. Let’s rendezvous and allow us to provide you a tour on our 7-day Food Rescue Operation, Community Kitchen Program and so much more. Diving down into our on-going programs and beyond!
Food Rescue Program
A systematic approach in delivering good quality surplus food from food businesses to people in need
Our cold-chain logistic system trucks hurl around to rescue surplus food from various sector of donors such as hotels, supermarkets, food producers, food retailers, and food manufacturers 7 days a week. Along with the food safety protocol and inspection, the rescued food is distributed to beneficiaries in low-income communities, orphanages, shelters, including most of vulnerable groups in the society.
Surplus Food Hub Program
An innovative logistic flow, in collaboration with our strategic partner to deliver and rescue food all in one trip!
Joint logistic forces between Berli Jucker (BJC) and SOS Bangkok, is a new innovative food rescue model of Surplus Food Hub Program. All in one cost-efficient roundtrip, starting with BJC daily logistics deliver fresh daily supplies and at the same time rescue food surplus from each outlet store back to the Distribution Center, whereas bulk surplus will be picked up by SOS logistic team and distributed to recipients. More than 20 outlets stores have joined the program and been contributing to the surplus food pick-up every day.
Community Fridge Program
An initiative that allows vendors to store the donated surplus food in a shared fridge.
Through collaborative partnerships with the Commons and Sam Yan Mitr Town, well known mixed-use shopping, office, and leisure community malls in Bangkok, the fridges are hosted in their properties. The program encourages restaurants and vendors to donate their surplus food into the designated fridge. The gathered-up food will be retrieved by SOS team and handed out to beneficiaries.
WEEKLY OPERATIONS
Our daily operations are protagonist, well then, the weekly operations deserve the deuteragonist. More programs on weekly basis sprung up complementing our works and extending the impacts. Let’s be introduced and mesmerized by our far-reaching performance.
Rescue Kitchen Program
Serving nutritious meals cooked from surplus ingredients for people in need
More than rescuing food, we desire to serve warm and nutritious meals to the undernourished communities especially during their trying time. The rescued surplus food and ingredients are distributed and creatively cooked right at the community kitchens across different locations. The Rescue Kitchen Program is thriving as it has been shaping extensive associations among the volunteers, neighbors, and their communities. It is truly a meal “cooked by the community, for the community” to relish and relieve.
Cook for SOS Program
Lend us a hand and support local communities with your culinary skills!
This program welcomes individual volunteers of all interest, to be a part and take initiative in cooking food for communities, especially those whose food security has been threatened during the pandemic. If you can’t physically join the Community Kitchens, transform yours to be part of the “cooking for the people” initiative. SOS logistic teams will deliver homey cooked meals to local communities in need.
INTERMITTENT
OPERATIONS
Intermittent operations refer to other assorted programs of SOS, enabling the impacts to greater extensive scope.
Remote Community Food Program
Allowing the extensive levels of aids to remote areas in the country
In other parts of Thailand, some rural residents in border provinces are food insecure, and at the same time, the lack of road infrastructure and the mountainous terrain particularly cause considerable challenges. Our military and volunteer networks render their assistance to transport and distribute food to villages and shelters in Mae Hong Son, Tak, Yala, Kanchanburi, etc. With the aid of the dedicated networks, we give so much reliance on them to achieve greater impacts on the extent in reaching the vulnerable people in remote areas.
SOS Garden Program
Growing food from scraps and feed them with food waste from the kitchen
The aftermath of SOS’s kitchen, it happened when we ran the Rescue Kitchen and realized the opportunity to replant the food waste. From green onion and Chinese celery to ginger root and fingerroot, these scraps often have plenty of life left. Taking advantage of the space, we also plant various home-grown vegetables and fertilize them with the compost made from food waste. The organic produces from our own yard not only be used in the SOS’s kitchen, but also feed our dear neighbors.
Healthy School Lunch Program
